Slavery & Slave Integration in Indigenous North America

Here I show the website I built to visualize the variations in slave holding behaviors of Indigenous societies in North America. Slavery is not always associated with agricultural production or state institution. There are various forms of slavery, from "open" to "closed" (as Watson defined). I hope my interactive visualization of anthropological records would help readers to better understand the diversity of human societies. 

Data Source: 

• WNAI — the D-PLACE "Western Indians" ethnographic dataset (Jorgensen 1980), all 172 sampled societies.

• Donald — values read from Leland Donald, "Slavery in Indigenous North America", The Cambridge World History of Slavery, vol. 3, ch. 9, pp. 217–247 — plus 21 peoples Donald discusses that fall outside the WNAI sample.
